Learn the incredible history of Pittsburgh's steel industry and how it powered the Industrial Revolution and supplied crucial materials during World War II.Educator and Docent for Rivers of Steel, Susie Toman will share stories of Pittsburgh from the swamp lands to the steel mills. You'll learn about of the evolution of the region from its geologic and geographic roots to its crushing downfall and rebirth.
Susie Toman grew up in Mt. Lebanon and is a graduate of Slippery Rock University with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences and Biology. She's worked as a park ranger and park manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Loyalhanna, an instructor at Penn State University New Kensington, the Executive Director of the Kiski Valley YMCA and currently she is an educator, docent and receptive guide for Rivers of Steel. Susie has a daughter in Washington, DC and a son in Lawrenceville. She lives in Washington Township with her husband, Paul.
