Event Details
Led by Katy DeMent, Pittsburgh crafter and Paper Lady, participants will explore papermaking history and processes by creating their own sheets of handmade paper. Folks will assist in the making of paper by hand and will enjoy beating fibers to a pulp! Everyone will embellish their sheets with a collection of choice natural materials, all held together with natural science–not glue! These “wet on wet” collage methods are tactile and spontaneous, rendering a creative and literal map of time and place. Each participant will go home with their own handmade paper artwork. All supplies provided.
About Katy: Katy's work has been presented at arts festivals and galleries worldwide winning many awards including the Best of Show at the Kentuck Festival 2009. The unique self taught processes she uses in papermaking have been featured on HGTV’s Crafter Coast to Coast as well as Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. Her handmade paper art work is collected privately and in museums including the American Museum of Folk Art in New York. She is enthusiastic about sharing her self- taught papermaking and printmaking processes as a Teaching Artist affiliated with arts organizations along the East coast. She was recognized as Georgia Arts Educator of the Year in 2005 for her efforts as a self taught artist with learning disabilities. In 2011 she relocated to Pittsburgh Pa. and has adopted it as her home embracing the climate, architecture and creative community. She currently holds studio space in a former dance studio in Swissvale where she makes paper out of invasive species and pull-prints on a 100 year old press.
