Program Description

Community Ink: Local Author Series

This community-focused series is designed to spotlight and celebrate the literary talent of Western Pennsylvania. This platform creates space for local authors to share their work, discuss their creative process, and connect directly with readers. These events feature book readings, lectures, signings, and Q&A sessions, fostering an intimate and interactive atmosphere. We've hosted authors like Marie Benedict, Brooke Barker and Boaz Frankel, Andy McPhee, and Clare Beams to name a few.

Our hope with Community Ink is to strengthen ties between authors and their local audience; showcase writers across genres, from fiction and poetry to memoirs and academic works; offer insights into the writing process, publishing journey, and the power of storytelling while providing visibility and encouragement for authors to thrive within their community.

Event Details

Pulling the Thread: Untangling Wheeling History is a captivating collection of 34 essays by Dr. Christina Fisanick about her childhood beginnings in Moundsville, West Virginia, to her return to Wheeling after earning a PhD. Fisanick's journey through local, state, and national archives unfolds a tapestry of Wheeling's rich past.

Learn more about Fisanick's story of unexpected connections and revelations; from indigenous peoples to contemporary Juneteenth celebrations, she weaves a narrative that transcends time, bringing to light forgotten stories and hidden ties. Through meticulous research, she uncovers Mark Twain's unexpected links to Wheeling, the birth of the town of Power spurred by a Parisian exhibition, and even the connection between Oglebay Park and the tragic wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Fisanick's prose is as engaging as her presentations. She's informative, blending the rigor of historical research with the flair of personal storytelling. A must-attend event for local history enthusiasts and story lovers alike.

Dr. Christina Fisanick is an internationally recognized scholar in digital storytelling and is the co-author, along with Robert Stakeley from the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, of Digital Storytelling as Public History: A Guidebook for Educators (Routledge, 2020). In addition, she is the editor or author of more than 30 other books and dozens of essays, poems, and articles. She is professor of English at Pennsylvania Western University and the president of the Writers Association of Northern Appalachia (WANA) for whom she co-hosts WANA LIVE!, WANA’s weekly reading series. She lives in Wheeling with her son and two cats. Learn more on her website.
