Program Description

Community Ink: Local Author Series

This community-focused series is designed to spotlight and celebrate the literary talent of Western Pennsylvania. This platform creates space for local authors to share their work, discuss their creative process, and connect directly with readers. These events feature book readings, lectures, signings, and Q&A sessions, fostering an intimate and interactive atmosphere. We've hosted authors like Marie Benedict, Brooke Barker and Boaz Frankel, Andy McPhee, and Clare Beams to name a few.

Our hope with Community Ink is to strengthen ties between authors and their local audience; showcase writers across genres, from fiction and poetry to memoirs and academic works; offer insights into the writing process, publishing journey, and the power of storytelling while providing visibility and encouragement for authors to thrive within their community.

Event Details

Join us for an evening of insight and education about the 1986 nuclear powerplant accident in Ukraine with author Michael Haritan. Chernobly: Aftermath of the Worlds Greatest Disaster, Haritan's part-memoir, part-documentary photography book, part human-interest story focuses on Chernobyl’s Exclusion Zone: the survivors, those still living there, and the children still affected by this devastating nuclear disaster. He'll share how a volunteer trip to teach English to middle school students in western Ukraine turned into his 7+ year passion project to bring this book to life. Learn some of the real, untold stories from the people at ground zero and experience touching yet haunting images of children placed in a state-run psychiatric institution.

Stop into the library the week before and after the event where some of the book's 400+ exclusive photographs will be on display.

Michael Haritan is a commercial photographer with over 33 years of experience. He was the preeminent photography contributor to Pittsburgh: Fulfilling its Destiny and continues to document the architecture and landscapes of the Pittsburgh region for editorial clients and personal projects for his fine art photography exhibits in local and national galleries.
